Are most used car salespeople working for dealerships paid a salary?

some dealers are moving from straight commission to plans based on volume, or with a base salary plus volume bonus. This certainly would be nice if you were selling a lot of low margin cars, because it would improve your ability to offer decent customer service and still be price competitive but the best salespeople will always do better on a commission based plan. At most mainstream dealers I worked at, the expectation was that you would sell 10 cars per month. If you fell short of that once or twice a year, it wasnt a big deal (but it was generally a very short paycheck), but if you did it regularly, theyd fire you. I typically sold between 1825, and the very best guys rarely fell below 20 and sometimes got close to 30. Then I moved to a luxury dealership, and there, you could sell 46 cars a month and make a perfectly good living. Most months I sold about 1012. My best was 21, but it was a total fluke. Typically the top salesperson would be around 1215.
